COLE-KNEE

kony
Yes I know the Kony internet blow up happened already and I'm pretty late on writing a blog post about it and been lacking on blogging a bit because of school, but I purposely delayed this posting. We are all aware of the social media fire Invisible Children has caused a few weeks ago. I logged onto my daily usuals to find people spreading around this Kony dude through a viral video. The video does have millions of views but does that really mean it was successful?

I personally have been aware of this issue in Uganda for quite sometime. Back when effulgence was an idea in middle school, I had ideas drawn for a "Kids With Gunz" tee. I do agree what is going on in Uganda is a terrible act of violence and needs to be stopped. I'm not a genius on the issue, but it irritates me how people get a reality check from watching a video for a second and brush it off their shoulder as they forget about the global issue at hand. Showing your appreciation definitely goes farther than a status update or a hash tag. The problem is that people probably don't care about subject as much as they think and ultimately, people are relying on others to do the job for them. Even Invisible Children was striving for the popular icons in our culture to be aware of the issue to help. But when it comes down to it, YOU have to make the difference. People can't rely the higher powers to make the difference. If everyone donated a dollar, the foundation could have raised over double the amount of money they have raised in 2011. The world unfortunately doest not work that way because we have excuses, rely on others and maybe simply don't care at about the issue as much as we think.

So before you go off spreading this serious political issue, make sure you do your research. It's great to join a bandwagon of good, but avoid giving out the wrong information. Know where your money is going and what is actually going on in Uganda. Most of all, live by your word especially on an issue like this because awareness is not good enough.
